UK AIS Website problem History

Although the majority of these problems have now been fixed this page has been left on the site for historical reference.

Performance problems

AES, the Web Browser interface for ANAIS runs on one of two servers. This allows one to be taken off-line for maintenance if required. As well as hosting AES these servers also host AIC's the AIP and a variety of other information. There have been teething problems with the servers which have led to them being rebuilt and it also appears that demand is far higher than was anticipated by the system design. There are currently more than 9,300 registered users. Before the introduction of ANAIS, aerodrome operators would download the A1/A8 bulletins daily. This was a simple download requiring no server-side processing.

bulletUnder the current system every download generates a separate query on the core database.
bulletBecause there is currently no satisfactory alternative to the old A1/A8 bulletins pilots are tending to request narrow route briefings, greatly increasing the number of queries.
bulletBecause the system is new, users are experimenting with it.
bulletMore traffic is being generated because of teething problems with the system.
bulletThere is a peak of activity each month when the AIRAC cycle kicks in, which involves a lot of data on the servers being updated and a lot of users downloading all of the updated information.

All of these issues are putting a lot of strain on the servers which is sometimes leading to denial of service. UK AIS are actively pursuing this problem and are investigating a hardware solution to increase capacity. A software update on 6 November 2002 appears to have greatly enhanced the system's speed of operation.

General Web Design Problems

"Date" is the date UK AIS were notified of this issue

Date Description
3 Oct 2002 A lot of links on the site require Adobe Acrobat Reader. Download links should be provided
3 Oct 2002 Home icon on page http://www.ais.org.uk/aes/pubs/default.htm used to return 404 error.  8/10/02 Now re-displays the same page rather than going back to the main AIS homepage. 4 Nov 2002. This has now been fixed.
3 Oct 2002 NavBar dropdowns appear separated from the NavBar using WIN 98SE and IE 6.0.28 Same IE version is ok With Win 2k. This has now been fixed
3 Oct 2002 Spelling error on briefing pages - Asterix is a French cartoon character. Correct spelling is asterisk. Click here to view a corrected page ;-) This has now been corrected.
3 Oct 2002 Results pages:- Many users will require to print PIB’s, e.g. for display on the self-briefing boards at airfields and flying clubs. There are a number of problems with the current design.

When reading a briefing it should be possible to see all of the parameters that were used in extracting it. At the moment Flight Level information does not appear in Narrow Route Briefings.
The header of a PIB should include a note of the number of pages, otherwise a user has no way of checking whether all pages are present in a printed copy.
Where the PIB runs to more than one page there is no printed document identity on each page allowing it to be identified with other pages forming part of the same briefing and no page number. For example if a flying club printed a briefing for the local training area and another briefing for the whole FIR it would not be possible to determine which briefing a particular page belonged to. This could be simply solved by incorporating a page header or footer containing a date/time stamp for the briefing and a page number.
The above problems may not be solvable using the current method of simply printing the web page. It may be necessary to format the text into a downloadable document in order to achieve page headers or footers.

A workround to alleviate this problem was published on the AIS website on 16 October 2002

Aerodrome Briefing Problems

"Date" is the date UK AIS were notified of this issue

Date Description
  No reported problems at present.

Area Briefing Problems

"Date" is the date UK AIS were notified of this issue

Date Description
7 Oct 2002 First FIR field is mandatory and so should be tinted yellow for consistency of design. (webmaster - cell needs class of "mandatory" applied to do this). The whole line of fields covering date, time, departure and arrival AD's does not contribute to the result and should be removed.

Route Briefing Problems

Date Description
7 Oct 2002

Route Briefing is of little use. You get NOTAM for the whole FIR so it is the same as an area briefing with some of the aerodromes filtered out. Radius field appears to do nothing and Lower and Upper FL fields appear to do nothing. First FIR field is mandatory and so should be tinted yellow for consistency of design. (webmaster - cell needs class of "mandatory" applied to do this). The whole line of fields covering date, time, departure and arrival AD's does not contribute to the result and should be removed.

Narrow Route Problems

"Date" is the date UK AIS were notified of this issue

Date Description
3 Oct 2002 Selected Flight Level does not appear on results page. This has been requested from the manufacturer.
11 Nov 2002 If arrival and departure aerodromes are set the same no en-route information is returned if the routing is DCT. A user might choose this with a Route Width of 30 nm to check for NOTAM within 30 nm of his base. If the routing is changed so that it is indirect (e.g. by specifying a turning point at the aerodrome co-ordinates) then the en-route info is returned.
11 Nov 2002 Height filtering does not work. Setting FL100 returns NOTAM with an upper limit of FL020 for example.  An explanation of the height filtering algorithm is now included in the FAQ.

Help File Problems

"Date" is the date UK AIS were notified of this issue

Date Description
3 Oct 2002 Page 3 of the AIS Briefing Help document issued on 24 Sept 2002 contained instructions on obtaining a NOTAM brief for 50NM around and Airfield with an ICAO Locator. These instructions did not work. The AIS Briefing Help document was updated on 31 Oct 2002 to correct this issue. However the suggested method of obtaining a local area brief remains cumbersome and time consuming.

Briefing Handbook Problems

"Date" is the date UK AIS were notified of this issue

Date Description
3 Oct 2002 “Briefing Handbook” is inappropriate terminology. Most people would expect this to be a handbook on how to get a briefing. (“My Briefings” or “Saved Briefings” are suggested as alternatives.)
3 Oct 2002 The Briefing Handbook page incorporates a control that obscures the dropdown menus. If this control MUST be always on top then it should be moved to a position where it does not affect other controls (e.g. to the right of “Briefing Handbook”)
3 Oct 2002 A delete option is required under “Selected Briefing”
3 Oct 2002 Every time a briefing is re-used a new copy of it is created, to no good purpose.
3 Oct 2002 A briefing that was saved with the "Notams with effective date earlier than" field left blank so that all NOTAM are included has a zero in the field when it is retrieved so that only the current day's NOTAM will be extracted. Fixed 16 October 2002
3 Oct 2002 Select a briefing. click "update", returns E0733 error. Fixed 16 October 2002
